Dean Smith glad to see Andy Butler back

Dean Smith today hailed Andy Butler's return a welcome "shot in the arm" for Walsall as they cope with what he says is the worst injury crisis of his reign.

Butler is expected to slot straight into the middle of a defence left short on numbers by injuries to James Chambers and Ben Purkiss.

Smith believes the former skipper's capture on a month's loan eases the pressure on the recovery of others and provides a morale-boost to his winless side.

"It just gives us a shot in the arm," he said. "Andy knows us well and he brings with him an experience, a charisma and a lot more besides.

"Him coming in for a month takes a lot of the pressure off and means we don't have to risk rushing back the likes of James Chambers.

"It gives us a bit more protection."

Butler was linked with a return to the Saddlers the moment it became apparent Sheffield United would make him available for loan but Smith began yesterday by playing down the chances of a return because of the player's wages.

But the move was then completed in early afternoon and Smith explained the reasons behind the quick turnaround.

"I didn't think anything would happen but then I got a phone call which changed everything," he said.

"I know he is pleased to be back and we are pleased to have him back, even though it is only for a month at the moment.

"It is a short term loan and while it could be extended at any time in a month he could be called back.

"We were all disappointed to see him leave over the summer though we understood the decision."

In addition to Chambers and Purkiss, Smith will again be without long-term absentees Jordan Cook and Sam Mantom for tomorrow's home game with Preston.

And while Ashley Grimes could return for Tuesday's trip to Rochdale, youngsters Amadou Bakayoko and Rico Henry are the latest to enter the treatment room after both suffered ankle injuries this week.

"We had a reserve game on Tuesday and they both had to come off," added Smith. "It feels like it is becoming a bit of a joke with the injuries."

When asked if this was the worst injury crisis he has experienced as a manager, Smith replied: "It is yes. It is lucky we have got a bigger squad this season as well and lucky we have a group of youngsters that have come in and done well."
