The Saddlers host Preston at the Banks's tomorrow looking to record their first win of the League One campaign.

With the season just six games old, Smith is refusing to press the panic button and believes it will take just one performance to turn things around.

"I'm concerned we haven't won a game yet but I'm not overly concerned we won't win because of the players we've got," he said. "It takes one performance to change all that.

"I was asked a stupid question last week about whether or not I was in a relegation battle with 40 games to go and six points off the play-offs.

"I have every faith in these players and what we do. Roy Hodgson would have struggled without Sterling, Sturridge, Henderson and Cahill and that's what we're without at the moment. We're trying to address that.

"The thing for us is always not to panic, we believe in what we're doing."

Smith believes the Banks's Stadium crowd can play their part and added: "What we want to do is excite the supporters.

"The one thing I was pleased with last week is that the supporters stuck with the players and that's really important.

"They have become educated with how we want to play and we have the likes of Kieron Morris, Reece Flanagan and Liam Kinsella working hard and trying to win a game but doing something a little bit difference.

"We have all been fans at one stage or another so we know Walsall fans want to see us win we're no different as staff and players to give them something to shout about."
