Jackson put the Skrill Conference Premier hosts ahead somewhat against the run of play when he prodded home from close range just short of the hour mark.

Clayton then made it two with a header six minutes from time.

Tom Bradshaw came closest for the Saddlers when he hit the bar but the defeat means Dean Smith's men are still searching for their first win of pre-season.

It looked like only a matter of time before the visitors would take the lead after a first half they dominated.

But they tired in the second period and Alfreton took their chances to claim the win.

After fairly evening opening ten minutes it was the Saddlers who gradually assumed control of the opening half.

Mal Benning was handed the first clear sight of goal after good work by trialist Danny Webber but his decision to pass rather than shoot, while unselfish, also allowed the defence to recover and clear.

The 20-year-old, predominantly a left-back, was playing in the unfamiliar position of left midfield and his advanced position on the pitch allowed him to cause plenty of trouble for Alfreton right-back Bradley Wood.

Benning drilled one shot past the post and into the gardens behind the ground, before sending another a foot over the bar on the half-volley after Andy Taylor's quick throw had caught out the home defence.

In between, Tom Bradshaw had the Saddlers best chance but was denied by home keeper Jon Stewart after beating the offside trap. Bradshaw pulled another shot just wide of the post.

For all the Saddlers possession it was the hosts who might have led at the break but Richard O'Donnell proved equal to Dan Bradley's shot after Borja Prieto Ruiz lost possession in the middle.

And it was Alfreton who did take the lead 13 minutes into the second period when, just moments after Bradshaw had hit the angle of post and bar for the Saddlers, Jackson converted from close range.

Mal Benning tested Stewart with a shot from distance and substitute Amadou Bakayoko headed over.

But the Saddlers were not controlling the game in the way they had during the first half and six minutes from time Clayton sealed the win for the hosts when he headed home a free-kick.

O'Donnell then saved smartly from Jake Sheridan as the hosts threatened a third.
