Walsall think signings after Jordan Cook injury

Walsall manager Dean Smith will target further forward additions this week as the club anxiously wait to discover the extent of Jordan Cook's ankle injury.

The 24-year-old forward was set to undergo a scan after being stretchered off during Saturday's 2-1 pre-season friendly defeat at Torquay United.

Cook, who signed a two-year deal with the Saddlers earlier this month, appeared to get his right foot caught in the turf when he attempted to turn with the ball seven minutes before half-time.

Smith is keeping his fingers crossed the injury is not serious but with the League One kick-off now less than three weeks away, Cook will at the very least face a race to recover in time for the opening fixture at Port Vale on August 9.

"He (Jordan) has rolled his ankle and that is the biggest disappointment out of anything," said Smith. "Unfortunately it happens in pre-season because we all like to protect our pitches and keep the grass a bit longer.

"We don't know how long he will be out for. We hope it is not too long but we will have to wait and see. It will need a scan and an X-Ray. It is just one of them where he has gone over on it."

Should Cook, who was expected to feature prominently in the manager's plans, be out for any serious length of time it could affect Smith's decision-making as he continues to hunt for fresh faces on the forward line. The Saddlers boss is set to welcome two more trialists to the club this week, along with 32-year-old former Sheffield United hitman Danny Webber, who played in the opening pre-season fixture at Wigan.

"We will have a look at them and see where we are," said Smith. "I'm also speaking to a few players too so hopefully we will have some movement this week. The focus remains on the attacking third."
