Walsall trial Holland under-19 ace Shabir Isoufi

Walsall are running the rule over ex-Holland under-19 international midfielder Shabir Isoufi.

The 21-year-old, who was born in Afghanistan and has been on the books of Dutch giants Feyenoord, is on trial with the Saddlers and played the final 12 minutes of last night's friendly defeat to Nottingham Forest.

Blackburn Rovers goalkeeper Seb Usai is another new trialist and played the second half of the game, as Saddlers boss Dean Smith stepped up his search for another shot-stopper.

The 23-year-old Australian custodian has never made a senior appearance for Rovers since signing from North Queensland Fury. Both men could feature in a Walsall side at Chasetown tonight.

Isoufi was born in Kandahar but has played professionally in the Netherlands and represented the country in the 2009 under-17 World Cup.

While he has never made a first team appearance for Feyenoord, his career has included loan spells at Excelsior, Dordrecht and most recently Telstar.

In 2009, he was believed to be the highest paid athlete from Afghanistan.

Smith, who is yet to make a decision on trialist James McQuilkin, has admitted he is only looking to bring in one or two more players ahead of the new League One campaign.

McQuilkin, who was released by Hereford United last season, was handed a start in last night's game, played 78 minutes before being replaced by Isoufi.

One area Smith is looking to strengthen is goalkeeping and, with Richard O'Donnell already signed up, Usai is the latest to be looked over following Shane Lewis, Tyrell Belford and Calum Barrett.

Should he move for Usai, Smith is likely to want a permanent deal, having stated his desire for the club to develop their own keeper. The Saddlers used no fewer than four goalkeepers on loan last season.

A second half strike from Forest's Andy Reid condemned Walsall to a first pre-season defeat.

Midfielder Sam Mantom had earlier put the Saddlers ahead with an excellent goal before Matt Derbyshire equalised for the visitors.

With the League One season just ten days away, Mantom says the players can't wait to get started.

He said: "Everyone is feeling fit and ready.

"We all want next Saturday to come round so we can kick-start and try and pick up as many points as we can."
