Walsall boss Dean Smith today hinted that ex-Albion defender James Chambers could yet earn a permanent deal at the club.

The 31-year-old full-back, who played at The Hawthorns from 1999-2005, has been on trial with the Saddlers but has yet to be offered a contract by Smith, who is close to finalising his squad for the forthcoming campaign.

Chambers' twin brother Adam has been at the Banks's Stadium since July 2011 and Smith suggested there is a possibility the pair could be permanently reunited in the near future. "James is still here. I've been having on-going discussions with James about where we go from here so I hope that will continue. James has done really well for us," said Smith.

"I've known him since he was a little kid. He and Adam are best friends with my cousin so I've grown up knowing about them, and I know all about them as players.

"James is on the back of a year out with injury. He played a couple of games out on loan, and he was at Watford when they got into the Premier League.

"He was then at Leicester and was successful at Doncaster. He knows the game, he knows how to play and he would be a good acquisition if we got him.

"I'm looking at one or two signings at the moment. One might be a loan, one permanent, then that would be where we're at."

Smith also addressed concerns that his squad is lacking in experience as he prepares his side for their opening game of the season on Saturday against Brentford in the Capital One Cup.

"There's a few young lads but there's also a bit of experience in there. We've got Jimmy Walker, Andy Butler, Dean Holden, Adam Chambers to name but a few. James Chambers has been training with us so that obviously adds experience," explained Smith,

"Young players have to learn the game but what you have to make sure is that the young players are the right players for us. We certainly think they are."
