Adam Chambers has 90 minutes to make up for lost time and put his last few "nightmare" months behind him.

The midfielder is ready for a big finish in tomorrow's season finale at MK Dons with the Saddlers' League One future secure.

The survival job was done when last weekend's 1-1 draw with Huddersfield left the Saddlers four points above the League One drop zone.

And the end of Florent Cuvelier's loan spell creates a midfield gap which Chambers is more than willing to fill.

A cut Achilles – and subsequent infection – in March's 1-0 win at Scunthorpe has seen him miss most of the Saddlers' run-in.

But the ex-Albion man is ready to take out his frustration on the Dons.

He said: "It's been a bit of a nightmare really, because I wanted to push myself to get back and play but it ended up costing me extra weeks.

"I had a while out after Scunthorpe and came back but broke down again, so it's been a bit of a freak thing. The cut I got was infected and my leg swelled up and set me back.

"In hindsight you think an extra few days would have helped and I could have played more – but you want to play. I wanted to get back for myself and the team as soon as possible, because we were still playing for our lives.

"You don't want to have finished the season not having played for a good few weeks, because then you've got the summer off too.

"If Flo was still here, it would have been difficult to get a game."

Cuvelier scored the goal which sealed survival and relegated Wycombe and Chesterfield along with Exeter and Rochdale last week. And Chambers is grateful the season is not going down to another final-day escape act.

"Things would have been different if results hadn't gone for us last week – then it would be a high-pressure game tomorrow," said the former Leyton Orient midfielder. "But we can go into the game a bit more relaxed and hopefully we can play decent football.

"This week has been good, we've had a couple of days off and the lads are bubbly now things aren't going to the last game of the season. We feel we deserve to stay up. You stay up over the course of the season and you deserve to finish where you do."

Boss Dean Smith has a fully fit squad with George Bowerman back from a foot injury and Manny Smith available after suspension.

He has targeted finishing above his former club Leyton Orient, who are fifth-from-bottom and level on 47 points with Walsall.

"We're more relaxed, but we've always been confident here anyway," said Smith. "There's always pressure on the game, but there's less pressure than at Southampton last season.

"We don't have to go and get anything to keep us in the league.

"I want to finish above Leyton Orient this season. You have to have a goal in whatever game and that's our goal at the moment."
