Adam Chambers today cleared Walsall boss Dean Smith of any blame for the Saddlers' struggles and insisted: 'It's our fault'.

The midfielder reckons the players must carry the can with the Saddlers in the League One drop zone.

They host Colchester on Saturday and Chambers insisted the squad, who have won just four league games this term, are responsible for their woes.

"When you're down at the bottom of the table there are always people pointing fingers and flak flying around but we're big enough to take it," he said, with Wycombe's 2-1 win over Tranmere on Saturday dropping the Saddlers into the bottom four.

"We all have to take our own part of that. The players have to do it on the pitch and that's the be all and end all.

"We're the ones out there playing, and good enough to be doing better than we are. We haven't performed consistently this season.

"We want to do it for the manager, ourselves and fans. We want to be winning games and moving up the table. He's a good manager and all the lads are behind him."

And the 31-year-old admitted the players, who suffered early exits in the FA Cup and Carling Cup, have let their long-suffering fans down.

"In certain games, definitely," said the former Albion man. "We've played in fits and starts and the first half against Bournemouth last month was probably the best we've played all season.

"They have paid their money to come and watch and be entertained and we haven't done that. We're conscious of that and it's something we want to change. We're trying to win games with good performances."

But Chambers rejected suggestions the Saddlers, who have dropped 17 points this term, have backed themselves into a corner ahead of crunch games with Colchester, Oldham, Wycombe and Scunthorpe.

"I wouldn't say we have," he said. "There are teams who have dropped points and we're one of them, especially late on. As the season goes on the games become more important but we're confident we can get enough points on the board to stay up.

"It's too early to say how close it'll be as there are still 18 games to go. We've been really close to putting a couple of wins together and we'll find ourselves going on a run."
