The Saddlers' chief admitted the 4-2 home defeat to Bury on Saturday which dropped them into the bottom four was "painful."
It left them with just one win in their last 15 games and Smith insisted his men are in the last chance saloon.
He said: "I have told to the lads they are falling short. If any of them – after Saturday – can say they did enough for themselves, their team-mates and for me, I'll stick up for them.
"If they don't, then they won't sleep easy. But the result tells you they didn't do enough, they were sloppy goals we conceded."
