Ice-cool Walsall striker Will Grigg today revealed he wanted to look "smug" after his wonder strike.

Grigg's volley almost claimed an improbable win after he put the below-par Saddlers 2-1 up with seven minutes left against Scunthorpe on Saturday.

The 20-year-old smashed in Richard Taundry's cross from 12 yards, drawing comparisons with Marco van Basten's famous goal for Holland against the USSR in Euro 1988.

Jimmy Ryan made it 2-2 in injury time but Grigg admitted he kept his cool to make his goal look even better.

The Northern Ireland under-21 international joked: "It was one of those that as a striker maybe you don't want to celebrate– not because I wasn't happy, I just wanted to look a bit smug. I'm not going to lie about it.

"It was either going in the top bin or row Z but I just happened to catch it well. Hopefully, I'll be seeing it on Sky a bit. I'll get a copy – I'll Sky plus it and watch it every five minutes.

"I've hit it and I didn't even feel the ball. I've caught it really nicely and it's in the back of the net, so I wouldn't mind them all of the time."
