Walsall were today on red alert after target Matt Gill was released by Norwich.

The midfielder's Carrow Road exit was rubber stamped last night leaving him free to find a new club after two years with the Canaries.

Boss Dean Smith has confirmed his interest in Gill – along with Marco Gbarssin and Marc Laird, who both ended the season on loan at the Banks's Stadium from Carlisle and Millwall respectively.

Norwich boss Paul Lambert said: "Matt Gill is away and will be looking for a new club. Gilly was brilliant and was a top, top pro. He was brilliant for the club and it's a sore one when you tell him because he's the type of lad he is. He was a great professional, one of the best I've seen and that's the highest compliment I can give him. Those sorts of players are important to have around the place."
