Walsall fans launch letter campaign

Walsall fans have launched a letter campaign urging the council to consider buying the Banks's Stadium.

The letter, which will be available to download from fans' websites, reveals their concerns about the future of the club, with the ground up for sale.

The Supporters' Trust, Supporters' Club and Unity have come together to issue a passionate plea for the council to meet and discuss Steve Jenkins' proposal.

They have rejected the idea but music producer and fan Jenkins wants the council to buy the stadium and land, which has been on the market since March, to safeguard the club's future.

Jenkins has written to every councillor with the details and benefits of buying the ground and the fans have composed their own letter for supporters to sign and post or email to the local authority.

The letter read: "Without some kind of intervention, there is always the danger that the freehold could fall into the hands of someone who did not have the interests of the football club at heart.

"Then the ever present danger is of the town losing the club and, with it, something that provides the town with much of its identity.

"I firmly believe that if the council and the club were to work together more closely in the future it would be hugely beneficial to everyone in the town and its image nationally."

The campaign has the backing of the club, including chairman Jeff Bonser and chief executive Stefan Gamble.
