Walsall slipped back into the League One relegation zone as their fight for survival took another twist after defeat to Leyton Orient.

Harry Kane and Jonathan Tehoue sunk the Saddlers at the Banks's Stadium, which hosted the lowest league crowd of the season with just 3,019 in attendance.

Julian Gray and home debutant Marc-Antoine Gbarssin hit the woodwork, but the Saddlers failed to build on a positive start.

Other results contrived to send Walsall back into the drop zone, ahead of a key trip to relegation rivals Yeovil on Saturday.

Darryl Westlake replaced the injured Aaron Lescott, who is out for at least a month with medial ligament damage, in the only change from Saturday's stalemate at Swindon.

The Saddlers started brightly and almost scored three times within a matter of seconds in the 19th minute.

Goalkeeper Jamie Jones parried Matt Richards' shot, Gray rattled the post with the rebound and Emmanuel Ledesma sent his follow-up wide.

Gbarssin then smacked the bar with a dipping 30-yard volley on 31 minutes as the Saddlers pressed.

But they fell behind two minutes before the break, when Kane's header from Dean Cox's cross looped in to the corner.

It was harsh on the hosts and they almost levelled immediately after the re-start, when Jones saved Richard Taundry's drive after a well worked free-kick.

But they fell further behind on 56 minutes when Westlake's slip allowed Matthew Spring to cross and substitute Tehoue – who had only been on the pitch six minutes – finished from three yards.

Jon Macken was denied by Jones while Oliver Lancashire's header was cleared, as the Saddlers rallied but couldn't muster a final charge.
