Dean Smith is eyeing more Walsall loan swoops - and threw down the gauntlet to his fringe players.

The Saddlers boss is keen to add to his squad when the loan window reopens on Monday to aid their League One survival battle.

He has already brought in Matt Gill from Norwich and Carlisle's Jason Price but is hunting more as the Saddlers bid to climb out of the drop zone.

"We're still looking to strengthen when the loan markets opens," said Smith. "There are a big few weeks coming up as we've got a lot of games. We're hoping to close the gap again."

Smith has challenged his squad to fight for their places, with only injured skipper Darren Byfield unavailable.

Clayton McDonald hasn't featured since the 1-1 FA Cup draw at Fleetwood in November while goalkeeper Jonny Brain has also fallen down the pecking order.

"They have to take their personal pride into it and keep themselves fit and ready because they all know they will have a chance," said Smith.

"Marshy (Paul Marshall) is ready to come in should he be needed. He did well until Matt Gill came in and the rest will be champing at the bit to show that what they can do."
