Luckless Walsall slipped back to the bottom of League One despite their battling efforts against Huddersfield.

Two late goals from Peter Clarke and Jordan Rhodes sunk the Saddlers after a pulsating game.

Alex Nicholls fired the hosts ahead before ex-Albion midfielder Kevin Kilbane levelled and Jamie McCombe headed Huddersfield in front.

Matt Richards' free kicked levelled the game two minutes after the break before Huddersfield's late show.

Goalkeeper Jimmy Walker returned to the bench after a month out with a hamstring injury, as David Bevan made his home debut in an unchanged line-up from Tuesday's 2-2 draw at Bristol Rovers.

And the Saddlers made a strong start – despite seeing Alan Lee fire wide on five minutes – as they hassled their promotion-chasing visitors.

Jonathan Macken fired over on 10 minutes but the Saddlers went ahead four minutes later, when Will Grigg found Nicholls for the winger to drill in from 17-yards.

But the lead only lasted five minutes when Kilbane seized on Andy Butler's sloppy pass, left Manny Smith for dead and slotted in after rounding Bevan.

It was harsh on the Saddlers – but they were the masters of their own downfall – and they fell behind after 25 minutes.

McCombe's persistence on the right won a corner and when Anthony Pilkington swung the ball over the defender rose highest at the far post to nod in.

The Saddlers' soft underbelly had been exposed again after a fine start and Paul Marshall's low free kick, which was saved by goalkeeper Alex Smithies, was the closest they came to levelling in the first-half.

Two minutes after the break though the Saddlers did level, when Clarke pushed Grigg and Richards' free-kick deflected off the wall and past Smithies.

Julian Gray flashed one wide as the Saddlers bossed the Terriers but they were undone 13 minutes from time.

Antony Kay headed down Gary Roberts' corner and Clarke's overhead kick beat Bevan.

Then, in stoppage time, Rhodes slotted in after Roberts' centre.
