Walsall caretaker Dean Smith today revealed he has been given the green light to bring in new recruits.

The head of youth is eyeing loan signings to boost the rock-bottom Saddlers' chance of avoiding the drop from League One.

Walsall go to Tranmere tomorrow knowing defeat could leave them 11 points from safety and while new men may not arrive immediately Smith has feelers out.

"I've got a few plates spinning at the moment, where I've got the possibility of getting a couple of loan signings in but Saturday and Tuesday might come a little bit too quickly for that," he said, with another eye on Tuesday's game at Bristol Rovers.

"We'll see where we are after those games and then I'll sit down with the chairman and see where we go."

Meanwhile, David Holdsworth is the latest name to be linked with the vacancy at the Banks's. The former Mansfield manager left Field Mill in November after a change of ownership.

Ex-Birmingham defender Holdsworth had a loan spell at Walsall in 2002, making 11 appearances and scoring once.
