Reuben Reid today handed Walsall a massive boost after making a rapid recovery from a hamstring injury.

The Saddlers' six-goal top scorer was expected to be out of Sunday's showdown at Charlton after limping off at Sheffield Wednesday last month.

But he has been given a slim chance of facing the second placed Addicks as the Saddlers attempt to get off the bottom of League One.

With Liam Dickinson having returned to Barnsley and Jon Macken out for another week boss Chris Hutchings needs the Albion loanee back.

"He was told two or three weeks and it's been around two weeks so there is a possibility," said Hutchings.

"It depends on his rehab and how he comes through the next couple of days with what he can and can't do.

"If he pulls it again it's not going to be a two week job, it'll be a five week job. We're very wary of that. He's worked extremely hard with Jon Whitney (physio) and he's positive but at the same time we can't be over positive.

"Your heart rules your head sometimes. It's a matter of doing the right things for the football club and the player. The most important thing is making sure he's fit.

"We are without Jon (Macken) as well but it's opened an opportunity for Will Grigg to come in and stake a claim so when one door closes for someone it opens the door for someone else.

"It depends whether they can take that opportunity."
