Young striker Will Grigg has admitted Walsall are doomed unless they pull together.

The striker made his full debut in the Saddlers' 1-0 FA Cup defeat at Torquay on Saturday – leaving their season in tatters.

They are bottom of League One and have made early exits from all three cup competitions and Grigg knows they cannot afford to let their heads drop.

He said: "People have got to step up. We need the leaders and the characters and if we don't step up we're not going to survive. We need to show it on the pitch.

"No-one's happy after that. We all know that we need to sort a few things out.

"We've had chances and not taken them and then silly errors at the back have seen us go 1-0 down and then we lost the game.

"We wanted to get as far as possible in the cup but now we're out of that so we know we've only got one task now and that is to survive in League One."

The 19-year-old had to wait almost two years for his first start – since making his bow against Cheltenham in December 2008 – but profited from injuries to Jonathan Macken and Reuben Reid.

He said: "The gaffer's given me the chance due to a few injuries and now it's just whether I've done enough today to get a start in the league on Saturday and when other players are back fit.

"I've been getting a few chances when I've come on, so maybe I need a little bit of luck,

"I've been sub for quite a few years now and for the youth team, so it's been my aim to start a game and it's definitely a proud moment."
