Walsall slipped back into the League One drop zone despite battling to a point at Dagenham & Redbridge.

Darren Currie headed the Daggers ahead before Martin Devaney's 50th minute strike hauled the Saddlers level.

David Davis headed Romain Vincelot's effort off the line just after the hour, before Reuben Reid missed the visitors' best chance after glancing straight at goalkeeper Tony Roberts.

Then, at the death, Saddlers No 1 Jonny Brain produced a reflex save to deny Danny Green before Reid's scuffed effort in injury time hit the post.

But, despite the point, Brentford's 3-0 win at Tranmere pushed the Saddlers back into the relegation zone.

Walsall were unchanged after last weekend's vital 2-1 win over Exeter but were on the back foot instantly, as the Daggers forced two early corners and Phil Ifil drove wide from distance.

Matt Richards' 35-yard free kick was turned behind by Roberts as the Saddlers hit back, in a low-key opening which Ryan McGivern tried to change but headed wide on 17 minutes.

The Saddlers started to press as Devaney and Jonathan Macken linked up, for the latter to dart into the box and test Roberts with an angled drive.

But, after 26 minutes, the hosts took the lead with a goal of worrying simplicity.

Bas Savage knocked the ball back to Green who found Currie stooping to head into the corner.

Brain got a hand to it but has now only kept one clean sheet in 14 games this season.

The goalkeeper was scrambling again on 34 minutes when Green's 30-yard free kick rattled the crossbar.

The Saddlers struggled to make any impact going forward but Reid carved out a chance eight minutes before the break after getting goalside of Scott Doe, but his tame volley failed to trouble Roberts.

Julian Gray, otherwise anonymous, then saw his snap-shot gathered by Roberts in first-half injury time before the fans vented their anger at manager Chris Hutchings.

But within five minutes of the re-start the Saddlers were level, when Macken found Devaney in space on the edge of the box and his tame effort crept beyond Roberts.

The goal breathed new life into the visitors but Vincelot almost restored Dagenham's lead, volleying wide after Savage beat Aaron Lescott.

Davis then came to the Saddlers' rescue on 63 minutes by clearing Vincelot's header off the line.

The contest was suddenly alive and Reid planted a free header straight at Roberts, while Devaney was a constant threat as the Daggers defence tired.

Brain and Andrew Davies blocked from Green and Savage, before Josh Scott glanced wide with eight minutes left.

The game was anyone's and Brain further redeemed himself on 89 minutes, turning Green's volley over.

There was still time for Reid's scuffed shot to kiss the post and Clayton McDonald to head over the resulting corner.
