Walsall want to keep David Davis
Walsall manager Chris Hutchings has confirmed he wants to extend midfielder David Davis' loan from Wolves.
Walsall manager Chris Hutchings has confirmed he wants to extend midfielder David Davis' loan from Wolves.
The 19-year-old's spell ends after next weekend's game at home to Exeter and Hutchings is keen to keep the 19-year-old for at least another month.
Davis has impressed in his four games for the Saddlers, despite their winless streak, and Hutchings will speak to Wolves manager Mick McCarthy about his starlet.
He said: "I'll be giving Mick a buzz at some stage next week to see the situation and whether we can keep him again.
"I'd like to because he's done very well, which is why he's been playing. He's got an old head on young shoulders and, in football terms, he's quite mature.
"He will be the first to admit he didn't have the best of games on Tuesday on the ball, but off the ball he was very effective. That's what you've got to do sometimes.
"If the passing isn't there, there shouldn't be a lack of effort. You need to win headers and get in the right places, they are the things you need to do if you are having a bad time on the ball.
"If you get both you've got a player and I think he's done that in recent weeks."
The Saddlers arrested their six game winless run with a goalless draw at Leyton Orient on Tuesday and host Yeovil on Saturday – with Davis expected to start again.
Hutchings reckons, with Davis key to his plans, it could grease the wheels when it comes to asking McCarthy for an extension.
He said: "That comes into it, Mick will have to assess his situation at Wolves – whether he gets injuries to midfield players – it's all ifs and buts until you ask the question.
"They could be quite content to go with what they've got and, if they are prepared to let him out again, it's something we'll look at."
Hutchings has been impressed with how Davis has adapted to life in League One and predicted a big future for the teenager.
The Walsall boss said: "David has got something in him. He's settled in very quickly, gets on well with all the lads and that's credit to him.
"He works extremely hard and wants to better himself and it's a good attitude from him to have."
