Rangers boss targets signing a striker
Stafford Rangers manager Greg Clowes today set his sights on signing a new striker as he looks to get his side firing on all cylinders in front of goal.
Stafford Rangers manager Greg Clowes today set his sights on signing a new striker as he looks to get his side firing on all cylinders in front of goal.
Rangers needed a replay and extra-time to see off lower-league Rugby Town in the FA Trophy, despite creating most of the chances in both games.
Forward Danny Quinn eventually settled the home tie on Tuesday night with a penalty and winger Jimmy Turner got the goal in Saturday's 1-1 draw.
Quinn is Rangers' top scorer with six although four have come from the spot, while strike partner Simon Everall has three strikes to his credit.
Liam Newman returned to the squad on Tuesday after illness and is fully fit but Clowes is looking to bring a fourth front-man to Marston Road.
He said: "This season, we have had a hell of a lot of possession and chances and we haven't turned it into goals.
"In the first-half on Tuesday night, we were very wasteful in front of goal, we seem to have a situation up there.
"We have played come good football this season but we haven't scored as many as I would have liked."
Newman will get the chance to catch the Rangers boss' eye in a specially-arranged friendly match away at Eccleshall on Tuesday night.
Clowes said: "It's an ideal chance for me to give Liam 90 minutes, he's fully fit now in my eyes so it's a case of putting him in.
"He's probably been sat there thinking that, if the other two are not likely to score, when am I going to get my chance?
"I want him to show me in this friendly that he's ready to jump in the team in front of the other two."
Sean Kinsella took part in a light training session on Tuesday night as he steps up his comeback from a broken ankle.
Rangers' only contracted player can operate in midfield or behind the strikers but is some way from a first-team comeback.
