Stafford Rangers’ remarkable FA Cup run comes to an end in dramatic fashion
Stafford Rangers’ FA Cup fairytale ends with a penalty shoot-out defeat to Grimsby Town.
Sometimes football takes your breath away. This was one of those occasions.
There could only be one winner, unfortunately. Everything must come to an end eventually, and Stafford Rangers’ remarkable FA Cup adventure was finally halted by Grimsby Town in the most dramatic fashion.
After a blistering first half, Stafford were firmly in control. By the 70th minute, they could almost see their name in the hat for the second round. It was within touching distance. But what followed was extraordinary.
Grimsby fought back, extra time brought another Stafford lead and another equaliser, before the tie was eventually settled by penalties. It was, quite simply, enthralling.

Yet, when the dust settles, one feeling will outweigh all others for those at Stafford Rangers: pride.
There will naturally be disappointment, but little to diminish what has been an extraordinary journey. What began in early August in the first qualifying round carried Rangers all the way to the first round proper for the first time in 20 years, matching their achievement of the 2006/07 campaign.
Grimsby stepped into the Marston Road cauldron and ultimately had just enough to end the dream in the lottery of penalties. But they leave behind a club and a town swept up in FA Cup fever.
One of the club’s new owners’ big ambitions upon their arrival was an FA Cup run. Within months, that dream has become a remarkable reality.
Few could have anticipated quite how far the journey would go. But a club desperate to reconnect with its supporters and bring people back through the turnstiles has achieved precisely that. What began in the first qualifying round has grown into a run which has captured the imagination of the town.
Another sell-out crowd packed into Marston Road, underlining just how much the club has reconnected with its community.

Once described as the ‘Non-League Manchester United’, Rangers have spent recent years trying to rediscover their former standing. There have been plenty of setbacks along the way, but this season has offered a glimpse of what might be possible again.
A sleeping giant has awoken. The financial rewards will also provide a significant boost, with television and prize money, gate receipts and commercial income delivering a welcome six-figure windfall. For a club entering a new era under its American investors, that could prove invaluable.
The dream of another giant-killing and a glamour tie in the second round may be over, but the bigger picture is considerably more encouraging.
This may be the end of Stafford Rangers’ FA Cup adventure, but it feels very much like the beginning of something else.
