Hednesford Town sign winger Omari Sterling-James for undisclosed fee

Hednesford Town have bolstered their attacking options as they bid for back-to-back promotions with the signing of winger Omari Sterling-James.

Sterling-James has joined the Northern Premier League leaders for an undisclosed fee from National League North strugglers Hereford.

Hednesford assistant manager Lee Vaughan played a key role in securing the pacey winger, having previously played alongside him during his own playing career.

Sterling-James said: "I know a few of the lads here and I’ve played with Lee before, so that connection definitely helped. Being local made it even more appealing.

"I’ve played across the leagues and more recently at National League North, and now I just want to come in, work hard and help the team get promoted. That’s the aim. I’m excited to get started and be part of what’s building here."

The 32-year-old, from Birmingham, made 22 appearances for Cheltenham Town between 2014 and 2016. Other clubs during his career include Solihull Moors, Mansfield Town, Kidderminster Harriers and, most recently, Rushall Olympic among others.

Pitmen boss Gavin Hurren said: "We’re at a stage of the season where we needed to strengthen, particularly with a few injuries in key areas, and Omari fitted exactly what we were looking for.

"He’s very strong from set pieces and is an attacking player who can operate across the front line. When the opportunity came up to bring him in, it was one we wanted to move on quickly.

"His numbers this season show the impact he can have in the final third. Bringing Omari in gives us more options and improves our chances during what will be a busy and important run of games."

Director of football, Andrew Reed, added: “When I got the call saying Omari was available and looking to get out at Hereford we wanted to jump on it.

"With Omari’s numbers this season being in the top five for assists and expected assists in the league above it was a great option. I was surprised to hear he wanted to move on as Hereford is a big club with a great fan base but when we get an opportunity to get a player like Omari we need to act."
