‘New hope’ - Askey hails Alleynians’ revival as they power out of trouble
Luke Askey has backed his Stone Old Alleynians to climb away from danger in the Midland Premier League, saying there is “new hope” for their season.
Alleynians secured a crucial 4-0 victory over fellow early strugglers Uttoxeter Town midweek, lifting them to 14th in the standings.
The win was just their third league triumph of the campaign, but their second in succession in all competitions, and boss Askey is in good spirits ahead of hosting Whitchurch Alport tomorrow.
Asked whether the victory could be a turning point, he said: “Yes, I think so.
“There is now a bit of positivity with two wins on the bounce that has given us more hope for the season than we had previously.
“It is testament to the lads who have come into the team and turned it around.
“We are certainly happy with the forward line, it was just a case of stopping conceding daft goals, and that then gives the forwards a platform to go and win the game.
“If we can carry on doing that, we know we have the lads who have goals and assists at the top end of the pitch.
“Whitchurch have some good young and athletic players. They have been scoring a lot of goals but conceding a lot too.
“If we can keep the back door shut, then we think we can get goals. I wouldn’t take anything for granted, they have some talented players.”
