Stafford Town boss Adam Wall praises loyal hitman and ‘born winner’ Hearsey who they ‘rely on’

Boss Adam Wall has lauded star man and “born winner” Matthew Hearsey who he admits has carried Stafford Town at times this season.

Hearsey has already netted a remarkable 24 this campaign, firing his way to the top of the scoring charts. He collected the North West Counties League Division One South Player of the Month award for October - his second in three months and the fifth of his career.

Hearsey played in all seven of Stafford’s fixtures in October, scoring in every game with 11 goals in total and adding five assists. His form has inevitably attracted attention from clubs higher up the non-league pyramid, yet he remains committed to Town which boss Wall admires.

He said: “He has single handedly fired us through games recently and that has been my frustration with the team in that sense.

“We are having some good performances all-round, but we rely on Matt, it is no secret.

“He is the captain, our top goalscorer, and probably one of the best players I have ever managed. Not only that, it is the off the pitch stuff as well.

“His attitude is tremendous, he is constantly turning down seven-day approaches from other clubs who are much higher up the pyramid.

“I know he is in his 30s, but he doesn’t need to show us the loyalty that he does. I can’t ask for much more from him.

“On the pitch he is a born winner and every chance that he seems to get, he seems to pluck something out for us.

“He is already on 24 goals for the season, so I can’t really ask for much more from a player can I.”

Hearsey also won the overall First Division South Player of the Year at the NWCFL Annual Dinner in June after helping Stafford reach the play-offs.

Stafford are playing catch-up with games in hand on the teams above them, and despite a few disappointing results Wall remains confident they can challenge.

“I am still of the belief that we are a better footballing team than we were last year, but there is definitely now something starting to stand out that you can’t keep having the possession that we do and lose games,” he added.

“My big frustration is that we are creating a lot of chances, but they are just not going in at the rate they were at the start of the season or even the end of the last.

“There is still a bit to do. We are right in the mix though, if we win our games in hand then we will be in the top three. But, there is some work to do.”
