Dean Smith backs character of Aston Villa's Emiliano Martinez
Villa boss Dean Smith has hailed Emiliano Martinez’s ‘strength of character’ – and says it was a big factor in why he was snapped up.
Martinez has been mightily impressive since arriving from Arsenal last summer, but had a tough night against West Ham in midweek – particularly at fault for the Hammers’ third in the 3-1 defeat.
The Argentinian is now preparing to face his old club at Villa Park, and Smith reiterated that he has brought a lot to the club in terms of both attitude and ability.
“That’s one of the big reasons we got him in – strength of character and attitude is a big thing in terms of our recruitment,” said Smith.
“Most players you bring in have the skill set and qualities, but the attitude and character are two traits we believe can help you fulfil potential.
“He’s had 10 clean sheets in 20 games, and he’s been really good acquisition for us.
“He held his hands up for the third goal on Wednesday evening, and he’s certainly got enough credit in the bank to warrant a mistake.”
Smith also highlighted the importance of having one player between the sticks week in and week out, having had to chop and change for a while last season.
“It’s really important. It was a tough decision because we had Tom Heaton fighting back to fitness, but we didn’t feel he’d be back for the first month or two of the season,” added Smith.
“Emi also knows that he has to be consistent, with Tom and Jed Steer also in the building.”
