After weeks of turmoil off the field, investment from Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens allowed Villa to unexpectedly hold on to most of their top stars – most notably, Jack Grealish .

Sawiris and Edens were in the Midlands on Saturday to watch Villa’s 1-1 draw with Reading from the directors’ box, as well as delivering a message through the matchday programme.

It read: “We are extremely grateful for the welcome given to us both by everyone connected with the club.

“In our short time here we have been particularly impressed by the professionalism and dedication of the club’s staff and their shared ambition with the fans to take Aston Villa forward. We feel our experience and expertise across business and sport can complement these efforts to help deliver success on and off the pitch. Alongside the results on the pitch we hope that the club’s transfer strategy in recent weeks has given the supporters cause for optimism. We believe they represent another signal of intent and demonstrate our ambitions for the club.”
