Scott Hogan hopes to have given Aston Villa boss Steve Bruce a selection headache
Scott Hogan hopes his midweek Carabao Cup exploits have given Villa boss Steve Bruce a selection headache – despite admitting frustration at missing out on a hat-trick.
The 26-year-old hitman bagged a brace in Tuesday’s 4-1 win over Wigan to double his previous goal tally for the club.
Hogan hopes to have forced his way into the manager’s thinking for tomorrow’s trip to Bristol City but could not hide his disappointment at missing out on a treble.
When it was suggested he could not have done more to stake his claim for a place, Hogan replied: “I could. I could’ve scored a hat-trick.
“I’m disappointed about that because it was there for me (against Wigan) and I didn’t get it.”
Hogan was an unused substitute in Saturday’s 4-2 win over Norwich after suffering a recurrence of the ankle problem which has blighted his Villa career to date.
Youngster Keinan Davis impressed in his place and is favourite to start at Ashton Gate.
Hogan has been in and out of the team since joining in a £12million move from Brentford in January but is confident his luck will soon change.
“The ankle has been alright, it just flared up,” he said. “It’s the consequence of past injuries, but it’s OK.
“I had an injection to calm it down and everything’s fine. It always helps to score two goals, if I don’t then people might say he’s not quite right just yet.
“People pick injuries up, but I don’t pick up soft tissue injuries, it’s always impact injuries and unlucky injuries.
“It’s been really unlucky, it’s not like I’m pulling up with hamstrings or whatever every week. It’s just impact injuries and they seem to be finding me at the moment. I’ve had it calmed down and hopefully I can get a run of games together.
“The fortunes will change for this club. It’s just a matter of time, I’ll keep doing the things I’m doing and working hard.”
