The 29-year-old has been told he can leave the Hammers just eight months after joining from Hull in a £10.2million deal.

And though a permanent switch is beyond Villa. due to their need to comply with Financial Fair Play rules, a loan agreement is thought to be edging nearer.

Sunderland are also interested but it is Villa who are currently thought to be leading the race, with boss Steve Bruce likely to be key in persuading Snodgrass to join.

Bruce signed the Scot for Hull back in 2014 and believes he can give Villa added quality and experience on the wing.

Villa have made six signings during the transfer window so far but this week missed out on Southampton striker Sam Gallagher, who opted to instead join rivals Blues.
