Having overseen a self-confessed ‘abject’ performance in the 1-0 defeat at Blackburn on Saturday, Bruce said his players must do more on their travels.

Villa are among the Championship’s top performers in terms of points gained at home this season – but among the worst away from home.

“We haven’t done enough away from home to win the matches that are required to get us where we want to be. We have to address that,” said the boss.

“We are top six at home and bottom six away. That tells me a little bit about mentality – and that has to improve.

“Winning four games away from home is an outrage really. “

He added: “We can’t have two attempts on target in 90 minutes with a following like that of 6,500 fans... away from home, we’re practically relegation material.”

Mile Jedinak is a serious doubt for Sunday’s final game at home to Brighton while Villa are also waiting on an update on Jonathan Kodjia’s ankle injury after he was at stretchered off at Ewood Park.
