Five goalkeepers Steve Bruce should consider signing for Aston Villa

With Steve Bruce approaching his first summer transfer window with Villa and the club in need of a permanent shot-stopper, here are five options he could go for between the sticks.

Sam Johnstone

The current man between the sticks at Villa Park, Sam Johnstone might've been shaky when he first donned the gloves at B6, but he grew into his role with a flourish - making him an ideal option for a permanent deal this summer.

Commanding his area well, the Manchester United product has pulled off a number of fine stops in his spell in claret and blue, and his distribution has been sound too.

The big question mark is whether Jose Mourinho is willing to let him go, and at what cost. Also, the attention of other clubs, especially those in the top flight could hamper any possible deal.

The bonus Villa have though is that Johnstone knows the team, he's spent plenty of time on-loan at the club so a move would be to somewhere he now knows well.

Likelihood of a deal: A realistic possibility.

Asmir Begovic

Begovic is highly rated, but would be a huge coup for Steve Bruce.

What a deal this would be, eh?

Asmir Begovic is worthy of much more than a place on the end of the bench, and at Chelsea he's sure to eventually get bored of watching football instead of playing it.

Earning plenty of plaudits during his time at Stoke City, Chelsea came calling and if not for Thibaut Courtois' good form he'd be on the pitch week in, week out at Stamford Bridge.

The hurdle for Villa will be two-fold; Getting him to join a club in the Championship, but also paying enough cash to please his current employers and himself happy.

If Steve Bruce could pull a deal like this one off, he'd undoubtedly win over any naysayers regarding transfers.

Likelihood of a deal: Unlikely, but fans can dream.

Allan McGregor

The Hull City links keep on coming for Bruce, who was always likely to have some former employees' names tipped with a move to the Midlands.

However, McGregor is currently finishing a loan deal of his own at Championship rivals Cardiff City - putting in a number of impressive displays for the Bluebirds, although likelihood of him staying there are very slim.

He's behind the likes of Eldin Jakupovic and David Marshall in the north-east, so a move elsewhere is likely - and having previously worked with Bruce he may see Villa as a desirable move.

However, questions will be raised by fans who have seen the Scotsman fail to hold down a place in a struggling side over the course of this season.

Likelihood: Very possible, but somewhat uninspiring.

Eldin Jakupovic

Having taken the gloves and done a great job at Hull City, Eldin Jakupovic has gone from relative unknown to hot property in Hull's miraculous turnaround.

Recent performances are only further increasing interest in the Bosnian-born Swiss international stopper, most notably with his late penalty save against Southampton.

Hull will undoubtedly want to keep him at the club, but with just a year remaining on his current deal the Tigers may be forced to entertain bids or risk losing him for nothing next summer.

However, with numerous clubs eyeing his recent entrance onto the scene, Villa will have plenty of competition for his signature.

Likelihood: An attractive option, but tough with competition.

Michel Vorm

One of the shock moves of the 2014 summer window, Michel Vorm has been playing second fiddle to the brilliant Hugo Lloris at Tottenham since joining and is unlikely to overtake the Frenchman anytime soon.

That's no discredit to the Dutchman though, as Lloris has been in inspired form in one of the country's best teams this season.

But should he look for a move elsewhere, Aston Villa could be as good an option as any - if he's willing to drop down to the Championship.

With his contract up in 2018, Spurs may consider selling him on if he pushes for a move, although it's not likely that Villa would be his only suitor.

Likelihood: A nice idea, but unlikely.
