Leandro Bacuna: Gabriel Agbonlahor can play a big part in Aston Villa promotion push
Leandro Bacuna reckons Gabriel Agbonlahor could still be a big player in a Villa promotion push next season after the striker's derby heroics ended a 14-month goal drought.
Agbonlahor's winner in Sunday's 1-0 victory over Blues was just his second goal since March 2015.
The 30-year-old, who is out of contract at the end of next season, has now been challenged to earn a new deal by boss Steve Bruce.
Agbonlahor was brought back in from the cold by Bruce after being deemed surplus to requirements by Roberto Di Matteo, following a dramatic fall from grace as Villa were relegated from the Premier League last season.
But midfielder Bacuna insists the veteran striker has the full support of the dressing room as he looks to get his career back on track.
"Everyone is supporting him, he has had a tough time," said Bacuna. "I'm really happy he scored the goal (on Sunday) and hopefully he can crack on from there.
"He can still be very good for this team. He is 30 but he still has the pace. His work-rate is good, he never gives up. He can be good for the team going forward.
"We need to give him the confidence he needs."
Despite the delight of derby victory, Bacuna admitted Villa's all-round performance left plenty to be desired and knows improvements will need to be made if they are to challenge at the top of the Championship next season.
"We have to look at it," he said. "We won the game, the defence were great and there was a really nice atmosphere.
"Of course we will get into it in the week. For now, the win is the most important thing."
