The 27-year-old has made just 22 appearances since signing from Lazio for £7million in 2013 and has now been forced out by yet another injury.

Boss Steve Bruce confirmed Kozak, who is almost certain to depart when his contract expires in the summer, has undergone surgery on his ankle.

Bruce said: "He (Kozak) has had an ankle operation and he's out for the rest of the season.

"To be honest with you he's had a really bad time.,

"It's a shame because he's been hit by so many injuries. He's a good player but he's out of contract in the summer."

Kozak scored four goals in his first season at Vila Park but suffered a broken leg in January 2014 and has struggled for fitness ever since.

He made two substitute appearances earlier this season, the last coming in a 3-1 defeat at Bristol City in late August.
