Villa hope to complete the signing of Nottingham Forest midfielder Henri Lansbury in the next 24 hours.

The 26-year-old is poised to become boss Steve Bruce's second signing of the January transfer window in a deal worth around £3million.

Bruce is eager to bolster his options in the middle of the park and is also targeting Barnsley's Conor Hourihane.

A bid for Lansbury, who began his career at Forest, was lodged earlier this month but Villa have had to remain patient due to a clouded ownership situation at Forest.

Bruce last week admitted he was prepared to wait for the summer, when Lansbury would have been out of contract, to complete a deal.

But a breakthrough has now been achieved and Lansbury could be available for Saturday's home game with Preston, should paperwork be completed on time.

Villa, who signed goalkeeper Sam Johnstone on loan from Manchester United earlier this month, have also made an enquiry for Middlesbrough striker Jordan Rhodes.
