The 48-year-old has joined from Hull City as boss Steve Bruce continues to build his backroom team.

Walsh worked with Bruce for four years at the KCOM Stadium, having initially joined the Tigers in December 2011.

He also played alongside the Villa boss at Manchester United, where he made 50 appearances during a playing career which also took in spells at Oldham Athletic, Middlesbrough, Bradford City and Wigan Athletic.

After beginning his coaching career in his latter playing days at Wigan, he enjoyed coaching spells at Derby County and Hartlepool United before being snapped up by then Tigers boss Nick Barmby.

Walsh now follows first-team coach Stephen Clemence in making the move to Villa. Bruce, who was appointed Villa's new boss last month, is still searching for an assistant.
