Keith Wyness: Steve Bruce will get time to succeed at Aston Villa

Chief executive Keith Wyness has insisted Steve Bruce will be given time to turn Villa's fortunes around.

Bruce this week became Villa's fifth permanent boss since February 2015 when he replaced Roberto Di Matteo, who was axed after just four months in charge.

"Steve is definitely going to be here for the long term," he said. "His man management skills were what was missing to get us over the line.

"Blow away the relegation cobwebs – that's what Steve has the ability to do. I have already seen it around the place. The whole place is lifted."

Di Matteo brought in nine new players during the summer at a cost of more than £50million but Wyness insisted funds will be available in January, should Bruce wish to strengthen.

"We are always open to looking at tweaking the squad," he said. "Steve has already said himself this is probably the best squad he has ever taken over.

"There's nothing massively wrong with the squad but would we spend again in January? Absolutely."
