Steve Bruce has confirmed holding talks with Villa over becoming the club's next manager.

The 55-year-old expects to find out this week whether he will be chosen as Roberto Di Matteo's successor.

Bruce has been the favourite for the post since the Italian was axed last Monday and, speaking on Sky's Goals on Sunday, the former Birmingham City boss made clear his desire for the job.

"I have had a chat with them, that is as far as it has gone," he said. "They are in a process and you have to respect that. I'm hoping I hear something this week.

"It would be a terrific job. I'm sure everyone would agree it is one of the big clubs in this country. It needs turning round a bit at the moment.

"It is a big, big club. Let's hope I hear something."

Bruce is expected to have a formal interview for the post in the next few days but is facing competition from caretaker boss Steve Clarke, who is also still in contention.

His past association with city rivals Blues, where he spent six years as manager between 2001 and 2007, has been seen as a potential stumbling block but Bruce does not believe it should be a problem.

"I think that is the big thing everyone has to weigh up," he said. "It was ten years ago and you can't go over the past. At the end of the day I'm an out of work football manager and I still think I have something to offer.

"I have been there and done it in the Championship. If the opportunity arose it is something I would seriously consider for the sheer size of the club and what is has to offer.

"I think most people have come to accept it was ten years ago. I don't think it would be a big, big problem. I don't think so anyway."

He added: "I hope in the next couple of days I hear what is happening. I have to respect the fact it is a process which has to be carried out."
