Mile Jedinak admits he was disappointed to see Roberto Di Matteo get the sack just weeks after signing for the Italian at Villa.

The Australia international insists that Villa are 'a work in progress' but feels a few positive results are all that is needed to dispel the dark clouds surrounding the club.

Jedinak, on international duty with Australia ahead of games against Saudi Arabia and Japan, said: "It's disappointing, but the manager's going to be the first to be put under pressure.

"I'm not trying to shift responsibility – everybody needs to take a look at themselves and we need to rectify what's happened."

And he added: "We're a work in progress, we're only a few positive results from turning it around and I've seen enough to know that we can get those results in a matter of games.

"It's going to be a challenge but one that you need to embrace, that I've definitely embraced."

Meanwhile, ex-Villa chief Alex McLeish admits fellow former Blues boss Steve Bruce would be an ideal candidate should he too cross the Second City divide.

"It was difficult for me having left Birmingham just a few days before and joining Villa, so I think mine might have been a bit more tricky than it will be for Steve Bruce," said McLeish.

"He (Bruce) has had a very good record in terms of getting teams out of the Championship."
