Nigel Spink: Tony Xia should give Roberto Di Matteo some more time
Club legend Nigel Spink has called for under-pressure boss to be given more time to get things right at Villa.
Di Matteo's position is already under scrutiny with Villa having won just one of their opening 10 Championship fixtures. There have even been suggestions the Italian could be axed if his team fail to take three points at Preston on Saturday.
Yet European Cup-winning keeper Spink believes Di Matteo, the first managerial appointment of new owner Tony Xia, should be afforded more breathing space after a summer where he overhauled the squad.
"I think he should be given more time to get things right, probably another 10 games," said Spink. "I was encouraged by the players he brought in over the summer and the frustrating this is had they been able to hold onto some of the leads they would be near the top. I just think it is too soon to start talking about changing the manager."
