The 20-year-old, who made his first-team debut last season, has agreed a two-year extension to his current contract, which had been set to expire next summer.

Though he is yet to feature under Roberto Di Matteo this term, the Australian is very much seen as one for the future at Villa Park and captained the club's under-21 team last year.

Lyden, who can also play as a full-back, said: "I'm really happy to have signed a contract extension.

"It's great that the manager has got faith in me and sees me as part of the future.

"I've loved my time here so far and I know that this is the best place for me to continue my development.

"It's an exciting time to be at the club too. There's a great groups of lads here and the coaching staff have been brilliant with me.

"There's a really positive atmosphere around the place.

"I want to help the club get back into the Premier League and play my part in any way I can."
