The 6ft 5in Dutchman – who has netted 35 times in 84 German top-flight appearances for Wolfsburg – has been interesting a number of clubs, including Premier League Southampton and Villa's Championship rivals Newcastle

United.

But German reports claim it is Villa who have moved ahead in the race for the striker, who also enjoyed a prolific spell in Dutch football with Heerenveen, by tabling a bid.

Meanwhile, Leandro Bacuna is keen for Villa's team spirit to shine through to the fans this season. The 25-year-old said: "I think as a team we're close, playing well and playing to win.

"We want to show the fans that we are not playing for ourselves and want to do the best for Aston Villa. Our aim is to make sure the fans have a good time and we can win games."

And on Roberto Di Matteo's developing plans, he added: "We've been working on our shape first and trying to keep clean sheets.

"From there on we try to create chances and try to get wins.

"I think we're playing very well.

"The only thing is that we need to get some wins and keep climbing higher up the table."
