The 37-year-old trained with Villa in pre-season with a view to earning a professional deal at the club, but boss Roberto Di Matteo decided against it.
And Petrov – who was diagnosed with acute leukaemia in March 2012 – has now chosen not to pursue a comeback anywhere else.
"There will be no comebacks," he said. "My return to professional football has failed but I will explain the reasons at a later stage. I am glad I was able to come back and do a pre-season, but sometimes things do not work out the way we want."
