Fulham have accepted Aston Villa's bid for striker Ross McCormack, believed to be in the region of £12m.

Boss Roberto Di Matteo is desperate to give his squad more firepower and has firmed up his interest in the Scotland international, a long-term target.

Norwich had looked firm favourites to sign McCormack, but have been unable to agree a fee and Villa now look to have hijacked the move.

Di Matteo had been keen to keep both players but the capture of McCormack would undoubtedly provide a timely boost, just days before the Championship season gets underway.

Despite a relatively quiet few weeks, Villa's manager has remained relaxed about his summer transfer dealings.

Further arrivals – and departures – are inevitable over the coming weeks as he looks to build a squad capable of getting back to the Premier League at the first attempt.

McCormack, who has scored 44 goals in the second tier over the last two seasons, would be seen as an essential part and Di Matteo remains keen to add another striker, with Chelsea's Patrick Bamford also on his radar.

With Gana having departed, the manager may also wish to bolster his diminishing options in central midfield.

Gana's exit had been inevitable from the moment Everton triggered a £7.1million relegation clause in his contract. The Senegal international has signed a four-year deal.
