The 31-year-old USA international has been deemed surplus to requirements by Villa boss Roberto Di Matteo and could complete his switch to the North-East later today.

Guzan was due at Middlesbrough's training complex this afternoon, having already agreed terms on a two-year deal as he prepares to end to an eight-year stay at Villa Park

He first joined Villa from Major League Soccer side Chivas in 2008, although he was briefly released in 2012.

He was later re-signed by then manager Paul Lambert and went on to establish himself as the club's No.1 for the next three campaigns.

But Guzan's form took a nosedive during the second half of the 2014-15 season and he struggled last term.

Villa finished rock bottom of the Premier League table, with him becoming one of several players to be targeted by supporters furious at the manner of the club's demise.
