The 29-year-old has also been hit with a substantial fine, thought to be around two weeks wages, after Villa concluded an investigation into his conduct and lifted his suspension.

Agbonlahor was banished from the training ground last week, when photographs apparently showing him partying hours after the club's relegation was confirmed appeared in a national newspaper.

In a statement posted on Instagram, Agbonlahor confirmed he would be stepping down as captain and apologised to supporters for his actions during a month which saw his off-field exploits prompt two separate club investigations.

The striker was also recently placed on a personal fitness programme, after caretaker boss Eric Black deemed him not in good enough condition for the Premier League.

Agbonlahor said: "I want to begin with an apology to all Aston Villa fans for my actions in recent weeks, especially at a time when it is devastating for everyone involved with the club.

"I am stepping down as club captain with immediate effect, as I do not deserve to carry out such a role any-more. This role was a huge honour to me and it hurts to have lost it.

"I have spent 16 years at Aston Villa and played some memorable games. My celebrations and passion, especially in games against local rivals, shows my loyalty to Aston Villa.

"I am asking Aston Villa fans for forgiveness as I'm hurting as well despite reports and photos in the press making out otherwise.

"I agree my performances this season have not been good enough but I will be working hard to make things right! Up The Villa, Villa Till I Die!"

In a club statement, Villa revealed Agbonlahor had been reminded of his "responsibilities" and confirmed he will return to training on Monday, though it is thought highly unlikely he will feature again this season.
