Aston Villa relegation: Gabby Agbonlahor is suspended

Aston Villa today formally suspended club captain Gabby Agbonlahor pending another internal investigation into his conduct off the field.

It's been claimed Agbonlahor went on a laughing gas and booze binge, on the day his club were relegated from the Premier League last Saturday.

The 29-year-old was apparently partying in a hotel room with pals and two girl fans, as the carpet was littered with cans of legal high nitrous oxide.

Later, the £60,000-a-week striker was thought to be seen downing shots out in public at London's Mayfair Hotel, as Villa lost 1-0 at Manchester United.

The claret and blues have already probed his behaviour over last month's international break, leading him to miss a 4-0 defeat at home to Chelsea.

Agbonlahor was pictured apparently smoking from a shisha pipe on a trip to Dubai, but no further action was taken against the player after further enquiries.

He's currently the club's longest-serving player and has more than two years left to run on his contract, but he's since been put on a personal fitness programme.

He's netted just once in 18 appearances this season and been absent from the last three games, which started with the visit of Chelsea.

He then missed last week's 2-1 defeat to Bournemouth, which pushed the club on the brink of relegation, after calling in sick with a virus.

Agbonlahor returned to training the following Monday and it was decided he would be omitted from first-team games until he was fit to the required standard.

He was not be fined. His regime is to include some work with the first-team, though he will also spend time with the club's under-21s.

He was due to train with the latter group on Saturday, before what appears to be a trip to the capital on the evening Villa were relegated from the top-flight for the first time since 1987.
