Remi Garde leaves Aston Villa: Fans show sympathy on Twitter

There was a lot of sympathy for Remi Garde following confirmation that his unsuccessful reign as Aston Villa manager was over.

Garde was brought in during November to try to stave off relegation, but with the club 12 points from safety he failed to engineer any sort of turnaround in almost five months in charge.

Not that anyone on Twitter seems to be blaming the Frenchman.

Villa's board failed complete a January transfer window signing to help boost their fight against the drop and from then it always seemed unlikely that Garde would see out the season.

They say bury bad news and Villa's decision to make the announcement during England's friendly against Holland at least ensured that.

Despite the goodwill for Garde, who won the Premier League with Arsenal as a player, he will leave Villa with an unenviable record.

The club will now search for a successor – Eric Black will take interim charge – with Championship football almost certainly awaiting the new boss.

The Villa board will be mulling over a decision and, while names such as David Moyes and Nigel Pearson stand out as possible replacements, Twitter flagged other options too.

A strict 4-4-2 for Villa next season then?
