Aston Villa to create a 'football board'

Aston Villa have continued their shake-up at the top with the creation of a new 'football board.'

The new set-up will be chaired by directors David Bernstein and Mervyn King. It will include Brian Little and a still-to-be-recruited head of football operations.

Under the new structure the manager, currently Remi Garde, will report to Bernstein. All other football functions will report to the head of football operations.

A club statement announcing the board read: "This reorganisation will provide specialist and dedicated control at Bodymoor Heath with the aim of bringing stability, confidence and a platform for long term success to Aston Villa."

It's the latest move in a busy week, which has seen the departures of chief executive Tom Fox and sporting director Hendrik Almstadt.

Club chairman Steve Hollis, who was appointed in January, has been carrying out a review following a disastrous season which looks certain to end in Villa being relegated from the Premier League.

Bernstein, the former Manchester City and FA chairman, was recruited as a director last week along with Little, who will be an advisor to the board.

Hollis said: "I have stated before that the business model is broken.

"The work I have started - and fortunately I have been joined by some very good Board colleagues - we are taking decisive action as we go along to address the things that are actually wrong in the model itself."
