Legend Brian Little: My hardest day as a Villa fan
Former Villa striker and manager Brian Little said Sunday was his hardest day in almost half a century of supporting the club.
The Villans were trounced 6-0 by Liverpool in front of their own supporters to leave them rooted to the foot of the Premier League table with 16 points, eight below the safety line.
And Little – who is now interim head coach of the Jersey national side – believes not one player in claret and blue can claim to have even remotely begun to do themselves justice.
"I joined the club in 1969 and I've lived around this area for most of my life," he said. "I've had 46 years of Aston Villa in my blood, in many respects, and yesterday was the hardest day I've had to sit and watch the team play.
"There wasn't an individual in the team who had a good game, or anywhere near a good game.
"You often have games of football where you lose badly but there are still three or four lads who really put a shift in but everyone played so far beneath their best it was untrue."
Villa entered the match on the back of four unbeaten Premier League games at home –including a 2-0 success over relegation rivals Norwich City last time out.
Daniel Sturridge and James Milner capitalised on slack defending to put Liverpool 2-0 up at half-time, before four further goals in the space of 13 second-half minutes completed their heaviest home loss since 1935.
Little – who also managed Wolves and Albion during his career – added: "There was a little bit of a feel around the place that they could get a result but just everything went wrong from the first goal where Daniel Sturridge cleverly sneaks into the box behind Joleon Lescott and got a header after a slow start to the game.
"After that it was just one error after another and everything that could go wrong did.
"I have been a football manager and you have days where you just want to dig a hole and hide."
