Lambert is highly likely to succeed Gary Bowyer, who was sacked by the Championship club on Tuesday.

Rovers moved quickly to speak to the Scot, sacked by Villa in February, amid rumours Fulham were also keen on the Scot to replace Kyt Symons, who left the London club on Sunday.

Lambert will take over a side sitting 16th in the Championship, having won just three of their 16 games this season.

The 46-year-old endured a difficult three years at Villa Park after being charged with cutting the club wage bill. Some reports have suggested ex-Albion boss Alan Irvine could join as his assistant at Ewood Park.
